A Forrester study recently reported 11 percent of online shoppers said that they would do three-quarters or more of their holiday spending online.  This translated into an estimated $33 billion back in 2007, up from $27 billion in 2006.

There are several benefits to shopping online.  There are no crowds to avoid and no need to stand and wait in long checkout lines.  This year there may be more people shopping on line than ever before due in large part to the increased gas prices.
Check with companies in advance regarding their stock on specific items.  Be sure to inquire about ordering and shipping terms and time frames.
