Tons of extra trash and garbage is produced during major holiday seasons. This creates a frightening impact on environmental concerns.
It’s important (not only during the holidays) to keep in mind that all of those fancy wrappings, packing materials, commercial plastic packaging, boxes, ribbons and bows have to eventually end up somewhere.
Whenever possible recycle gift wrap, printed bags, baskets, ribbons and bows. Keep packing materials such as bubble wrap or packing peanuts and use them to protect precious family heirlooms while in storage or for shipping expensive or fragile items to friends or loved ones.
Give gifts that require little or no packaging. Purchase tickets for events such as baseball, hockey or football. Theater, dinner and gift cards are also good choices. If you’re at a loss and time is running out you can never go wrong with edible items such as fruit baskets, assortments of cheese and crackers, cakes and cookies. Special occasion consumables of sparkling or apple ciders, champagne and wine are easily purchased for those last minute occasions that are requesting the honor of your presence.
